Caring for Normal Skin

Dr Chee Yew Wen (Dr Chee) pointed out that if you do not experience any dry, oily or sensitive skin problems, your skin most probably falls under the ‘normal’ skin type. Lucky you! How do you determine if you have a normal skin type? If you do not experience any facial tightness or redness, fine lines and almost invisible pores, you most probably fall under this category.

However, it is still important and definitely essential to take care and maintain your healthy complexion through the right skincare products and a healthy balanced diet even if you are not experiencing any major problems. As our body and environment changes, our skin types also start to change when the skin meets various underlying factors.

The general principles to radiant and healthy skin is to Protect in the day and Replenish in the night.

Caring for Normal Skin requires the same amount of care towards that of sensitive skin.

Skin Care Routine for Normal Skin

A suggested skin care routine to maintain your healthy, radiant complexion as follows:

  1. Cleanser
If you are wearing makeup, remove your makeup entirely with a gentle cleanser like a moisturising cleansing foam or micellar water followed by a hydrating facial wash.Start off the cleansing with lukewarm water to open up the pores and splash it with cold water as the final step to close and minimise the pores. Double cleansing ensures that your skin is thoroughly cleaned and prevents your skin from being clogged. Gently dab your skin dry with a soft towel.
  2. Toner
Applying toner on your face using cotton pad ensures that you are removing the very last traces of dirt and grimes that are not washed off properly during the cleansing step. This step is necessary for those who had heavy makeup or sunscreen prior removal.Toner is optional if you are wearing light or minimal makeup as you do not want to strip off too much of your natural oil off your skin which may cause dryness.
  3. Serum
Next up, applying serum which are usually liquid-based is easily spreadable across the face. They are chock full of power ingredients that penetrates deep into the skin due to the very small molecules. There are many different types of serums available in the market for different types of skin concerns like anti-aging and skin brightening therefore choose one that best fits your needs.
  4. Moisturiser
We are often asked what is the difference between a serum and a moisturiser? The main difference lies in the moisture locking content. While moisturiser acts as a barrier between the skin and the environment to lock and seal in moisture preventing it from drying out and keeping the skin soft and supple, serum does not have the same function as a moisturiser. The molecules in the moisturiser is also bigger and does not penetrate as deep into the skin as serum does.
  5. Sunblock (for Day Time)
Dr Chee cannot stress enough how important it is to always apply sunblock in the day and as long as you are exposed in the sun. By exposing your skin into direct contact with the harmful rays, you are also putting your skin and body in risk of getting skin cancer, sun burnt, hyper-pigmentation and premature aging skin. While effects do not take place immediately, it will take effect and show up on your skin a few years down the road. Therefore, prevention is important and you will thank yourself in the later years.

Additional Skincare Tips

While the above are the basic skincare routine that you should be following, you can also consider adding eye cream and face mist for an overall enhanced regimen. Eye cream can help to reduce eye puffiness, fine lines around the eyes and slightly lighten dark eye circles.

The content in the eye cream is specially formulated for the delicate and sensitive area around the eyes to reduce any sensitivity that may occur during application. Face mist is another skincare product with many uses and also a great product to carry them around in your bag. A refreshing spritz during mid-day can calm and give your face a boost by keeping your face looking dewy and moisturised.

While facial mist sounds like an all-rounder skincare product, do note that excessive use of facial mist might do more good than bad. Keep your spritzing to one or two sprays instead of excessive spraying and dab off the excess using a soft tissue to prevent your skin from drying out as leaving the mist on your skin without drying causes the moisture to evaporate.

If you are looking to turn into laser treatments to maintain your overall youthful complexion, Dr Chee suggests seeing your aesthetic doctor to recommend the appropriate laser rejuvenation program.
